Laura Collins commented on Susan Haugland's blog post "Musical Literacy" (i.e. - reading notes as in Western notation)
"Hi Susan, What a great question. It is always the question, no? I think sometimes singers and instrumentalists approach the reading differently. I was taught to read by note names years and years ago at piano and in band. But in chorus and…"

Susan Haugland commented on Susan Haugland's blog post "Musical Literacy" (i.e. - reading notes as in Western notation)
"Bravo Eric and Chris! I agree - rhythmic notation is the most accessible road into traditional notation and Eric, I'm so glad that you're starting with what they ALREADY know!! Hurray! Speech based rhythm, I have found, is key. The old way…"

Eric Brummitt commented on Susan Haugland's blog post "Musical Literacy" (i.e. - reading notes as in Western notation)
"Thank you for having the courage to talk about this. I have been doing something totally new this year in my classroom. I think of it as "rhythmic melody notation." I write out melodies that my middle school students know - everything from…"

Chris Brown commented on Susan Haugland's blog post "Musical Literacy" (i.e. - reading notes as in Western notation)
"Thanks for your interesting and bravely stated post Susan. I learned to read in my late twenties, I'd already played all over Europe and made dozens of recordings. When it came to resolving my illiteracy it came down to eighteen months of very…"

"Musical Literacy" (i.e. - reading notes as in Western notation)

I've been thinking a LOT about this lately. I'm 2/3 of the way through the first year of my pilot project, which is called "Fiddles for All." This program is the result of a grant I received through a local organization which allowed me to purchase 25 quarter and half size violins for my general music classroom. All second graders in my district learn to play the violin as part of their general music class. They do not take the instruments home and I see them twenty-five minutes a week, twice a…See More

Susan Haugland commented on Susan Haugland's blog post Why, not What or How
"So - if becoming a music teacher was for you a financial necessity, have you found it to be more fulfilling than you expected? Let me expand on that question - why is music education important to students in public (or private, or parochial, or…"

Randy Young commented on Susan Haugland's blog post Why, not What or How
"For me, I think the "why" is very similar to what Chris said. If I can, in some way, help steer someone to a life driven by passion and love for what they do - in this case music- then I feel a sense of accomplishment in that. I never…"

Chris Brown commented on Susan Haugland's blog post Why, not What or How
"You raise a great question and I've been thinking about how to answer this. To keep it brief my reasons for teaching are more , or want of a better term, self-centered. People have been asking me to share my skills/knowledge with them since…"

Why, not What or How

Whilst in the middle of writing a new book, my daughter's boyfriend and I discussed the evolution of the recording industry and the impact said industry has had on music education over the last century (or has NOT had) and he tells me, "that book you're writing is the same thing. You could just be writing a blog and putting it out there." He's right, in a way - but the benefit of publishing my thoughts in a hard or soft-bound 150 or so pages is that it gets delivered to my target audience:…See More

2nd Grade Violin Project

A grant secured through the Lake Bluff Alliance for Excellence funded the "Fiddles for All" violin project in which all 2nd grade students at Lake Bluff Elementary School will learn to play violin as part of the general music curriculum. In an innovative approach, the violins are being incorporated into the Orff-based classes.
